Introducing our leather alternative - Piñatex
Vegan leather is here - and it comes from pineapples!
Finding natural materials that don’t compromise people or the planet has always been the basis for our products. Introducing Piñatex, a sustainable, vegan leather alternative made from pineapple leaves!
How?
An innovative material made from discarded pineapple leaves, Piñatex is a by-product of existing agriculture. The cellulose fibres from the leaves are extracted by the farmer through a process called decorticating, then turned into a non-woven mesh which becomes the base for Piñatex. Once leaves have been stripped of fibre the leftover biomass can be used as a nutrient-rich natural fertiliser or a biofuel, so nothing is wasted. The rolls of mesh are then sent to Spain where they are coated and finished, leaving fabric with a leather-like appearance, creating a soft and flexible textile that’s very durable.
Who?
Developed by Dr. Carmen Hijosa after her work as a leather export consultant in the Philippines, Piñatex is a response to a call for socially and environmentally responsible fabric, created by her company Ananas Anam. Piñatex contains no animal product or toxic chemicals, and is a completely natural, sustainably-sourced material. You can discover more here.
What?
We’ve recreated the Josie Crossbody and the Rose Crossbody shapes in two colours made from Piñatex. The Emily Piñatex Crossbody is available in paprika red, and the appropriately named Greta Piñatex Crossbody is available in a choice of paprika red or black.
*Please note that we only stock a small amount of Piñatex at a time, so each piece is Limited Edition. Ss of 2024 these 2 bags are now sold out. You can see our current Pinatex pieces below.
