Article: Our Commitment to Landscape Restoration

Our Commitment to Landscape Restoration

Our Commitment to Landscape Restoration

For many years, the assumption has been straightforward: more trees planted equals greater positive environmental impact.

At Duffle & Co, we believe environmental responsibility demands a more holistic approach, one that considers ecosystems as a whole.

This belief has led us to evolve our partnership with Eden: People+Planet, who are now dedicated to comprehensive landscape restoration that prioritises ecosystem health, community leadership, and long-term outcomes.

The Limitations of Tree-Planting Metrics

As of 2025, our tree count reached 48,226, an achievement our whole community can be proud of. And while tree planting remains an important tool, we believe there is an opportunity to give in a way that addresses critical factors that determine whether environmental impact truly lasts.

These include:

  • long-term survival rates of trees planted

  • protection of existing forests and natural habitats

  • recovery of biodiversity across entire ecosystems

  • watershed health and downstream water security

  • community engagement and sustainable livelihoods

Without addressing these elements, environmental initiatives risk becoming short-term interventions rather than sustainable solutions.

What Landscape Restoration Achieves

Landscape restoration takes an ecosystem-level perspective.

Rather than focusing solely on planting new trees, it addresses the broader conditions required for nature to recover and thrive.

Such as:

  • protecting existing natural forests

  • restoring degraded land and watersheds

  • supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities

  • long-term monitoring and verification of environmental outcomes

The Importance of Community-Led Conservation

Lasting environmental outcomes are inseparable from the people who live within these landscapes.

Eden’s work places communities at the centre of restoration efforts, ensuring that local voices:

  • design restoration strategies aligned with their needs

  • implement conservation and land-management practices

  • benefit economically over time through sustainable livelihoods

A Long-Term Commitment to Verified Outcomes

Unlike short project cycles often associated with tree-planting initiatives, landscape restoration requires long-term investment.

Projects supported through this partnership operate on 40-year timelines, allowing ecosystems the time they need to recover fully and ensuring environmental permanence.

Impact is measured through:

  • hectares under protection and restoration

  • verified carbon sequestration

  • biodiversity indicators and habitat connectivity

  • watershed health

  • sustainable livelihoods supported

All outcomes are monitored using internationally recognised, science-based standards, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Where Our Partnership Creates Impact

Through our partnership with Eden: People+Planet, Duffle & Co supports 5 square metres of landscape restoration with every bag purchased.

With a 40 year focus currently taking place in Africa, Eden's projects impact areas of:

  • Tanzania

  • Kenya

  • Madagascar

  • Zambia

A More Responsible Path Forward

Tree planting will always have a role in environmental solutions. But it is only one part of a much larger system.

By supporting landscape restoration, Duffle & Co and our customers are investing in ecosystems that can regenerate naturally, communities that lead the work, and outcomes that stand the test of time.

Because responsibility, like craftsmanship, is measured by what endures.
